DeFiChain has been an extraordinary project, and the whole DeFiChain Labs team was honored to be a part of it.
But all good things have to come to an end, and for us, that means handing over our responsibilities to new groups and individuals represented by the community.
Since we took over the agenda from the Bake team almost a year ago, we always acted in a way that benefited the community.
Sure, we could have been a bit “louder” and discussed things more thoroughly, but as the good old saying goes: “too many cooks spoil the broth.”
We initiated most things ourselves because, most of the time, there was simply no time left to discuss things for weeks.
Going Above and Beyond for the Community
One example of this was when a promised deal was not kept, and we suddenly found ourselves facing the decision of either keeping Kucoin as an exchange partner back in April or not.
Without much hesitation, we used our own funds – money that was intended to last us for a couple more months – to help in the best interest of the community.
Besides that, what many most likely do not realize is that we were also responsible for the blockchain itself. We have to say, we’re actually surprised that in the last year since we were responsible, there were barely any downtimes, if any.
Our systems and tightly knitted network of people overseeing operations did a marvelous job here. All these people, faceless to the community, are invaluable for keeping a blockchain project like DeFiChain up and running.
In the end, the whole DeFiChain Labs team took over many more agendas than previously agreed to and approved by the community. Due to our rigorously low spending habits, we are surprised and also thankful to the community that we “lasted” so long.
The Reality of Professional Operations
With DeFiChain Labs stepping back and handing operations over to the community, this moment will serve as a wake-up call for many.
In the past, some community members questioned why we requested funding and why our work could not simply be done for free.
The reality is that everything in this industry comes with significant costs:
- Maintaining infrastructure and blockchain operations
- Managing social media and community channels
- Producing quality content and educational materials
- Liaising with exchanges and maintaining partnerships
- Market making and liquidity provision
- Professional moderation across multiple platforms and languages
Based on our experience, running these operations in a professional and sustainable way cannot be achieved for less than $100,000 per year – and that estimate does not even include salaries.
What to Expect Moving Forward
Now that responsibility is shifting to volunteers, the community will inevitably notice a decline in both the quality and quantity of output.
Here’s what you can realistically expect:
- Social media activity will slow down compared to the multiple updates we provided each week
- Blog posts and content production will be less frequent and inconsistent
- Community engagement will require more patience as response times increase
- Exchange delistings are already happening, as keeping listings active requires substantial financial resources
- Infrastructure will consolidate under MyDeFiChain to maintain efficiency
- Moderation across Reddit, Discord, and Telegram – especially in multiple languages – will not maintain the same standards
A Difficult but Necessary Decision
We would have loved to continue providing these services, but both the scope of work and the professional expertise required come at a cost the community is no longer able to support.
With the Community Fund depleted and no central sponsor willing to commit the necessary funding, the handover was the only realistic option.
This wasn’t a decision we made lightly – it was born out of financial necessity and the recognition that sustainable operations require sustainable funding.
The Future is in Good Hands
Anyways, that was the past – now comes the future, and the future will be bright and in the hands of the community.
That’s why we have already transferred the following assets to the community:
- Reddit accounts
- Telegram channels
- Discord servers
- defichain.com domain
- defichain.io domain
- jellyfishsdk.com domain
In a second step, we’ll also transfer all the remaining assets like the blog and other resources to the respective individuals.
A Heartfelt Thank You
The DeFiChain Labs team wants to take this opportunity to thank the DeFiChain community for standing with us and helping to advance this blockchain. We wish the community all the best in their undertakings to make DeFiChain great again.
Important Notice: The DeFiChain Labs team will not be responsible for any content that will be published and distributed after September 1st, 2025.
Thank you for an incredible journey.
The future of DeFiChain is now in your capable hands.
